Junior Program (U19)Our Junior program trains rowers aged 12-18 years to compete their competitive goals in a variety of rowing shells from singles, to doubles, quads and the big 8s. Some regattas will have more specific age divisions or novice events. Junior A events are U19 (in the calendar year) and Junior B events are U17 and Junior C events are U15.
The core training session times for 2016 are weekdays from 4:30-6:15 PM on Mondays and Thursdays, and Saturday's from 9:00-11:00 AM. These will be the practice times for both the Novices and Experienced athletes. These are also the times for any junior aged athlete (under 19 in 2014) wanting to join the club. The junior novice program (no experience necessary) is embedded in the junior competitive program. Once athletes learn the basics of rowing and boat-handling (usually after a month), they start rowing with the more experienced athletes of the competitive program (but they can be considered a novice at some regattas for up to one calendar year).
Depending on one's experience and aspirations, there may be anywhere from 3 to 9 sessions on the weekly training program provided (some of the extras being independent dry-land training), though none are mandatory. The program has an open door policy, come when and as often as you can. The more you come, the faster you get fast!
Our most serious athletes will be able to do additional afternoon practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-6:15pm and most Fridays from 2:15-3:45pm. In the month of July, additional weekday morning practices will be offered for those any who want to attend (8:00am-10:00am), these practices are a great opportunity to both work on skills in small boats and get more training in.
Regattas and Competitions
Local regattas include Calgary and Edmonton. Regional regattas include Regina and Victoria, while the pinnacle of rowing competition takes place in St. Catherine's at the Canadian Henley Regatta.
